Halloween Read-A-Thon

The Halloween Read-A-Thon is hosted by YA Books Reviewed. The idea is from Friday-Sunday this weekend you read as many books as you can with a paranormal/Halloween theme.
I need to catch up on reading and post some reviews, so I'm participating! Here's what I'm planning on reading this weekend:

Guardian of the Gate by Michelle Zink
The Ghosts of Ashbury High by Jaclyn Moriarty
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare (a re-read, may not actually read)
Halo by Alexandra Adornetto
The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff

And I might finish my current read...
I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You by Ally Carter
...even though it doesn't quite fit with the theme.

I know that's a bit of a big list, and I don't think I'll be able to finish all of them, but it's my goal, to the best of my ability at least! Wish me luck! :)

Book Blogger Hops :D

It's Friday, time for the Blogger Hop again! The Hop is hosted by Crazy-For-Books.

If you're here for the first time, welcome! To my followers- I'm sorry it's been a slow week, no reviews! (Gasp!) I have been reading, but I'm getting ready for the 10 Days of Halloween, and I'm saving my reviews to post then to go along with some planned events.

Book Blogger Hop

The question of the week for the Hop is:
"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"

My answer:
Most of the time, I just stick with the book and try to get through it so I can review it, but if it's too awful that I just can't, than I'll give up on it. That doesn't happen very often though, it's been a while since I put down a book.

EDIT: And there's Parajunkee's Follow Friday which I haven't done in forever, but I'm joining this week!

The question is:
What is your reading suggestion this week?

My answer:
Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel. I haven't reviewed it yet, but it was great and I would definitely recommend it.

I already mentioned if you don't see a whole ton of posts from me this coming week either, that's why. My reviews of Infinite Days and Matched will be posted in a couple of weeks even though I finished them. So look for that coming eventually!

Other than that, thanks for stopping by and please leave a comment with a link to your blog if you become a follower!

Happy Hopping!

Teaser Tuesday (1)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I thought I'd change it up a bit, so this is my first time doing this meme!

My Teaser:

"Will you go to winter prom with me?"
"Of course," I whispered, sure I would fall asleep in moments. "Justin?"
"Mm-hmm?" he said, moments from sleep himself.
"What's a prom?"
-Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel, pg. 210

There's Lenah for you...haha, I loved this line.

NaNoWriMo (or i must be crazy...)

Yes, for the first time ever, I signed up for National Novel Writing Month- or NaNoWriMo. If you haven't heard of it, it's that during the month of November, you write a 50,000 word novel (which is actually quite short). I heard of this last year, but I finally decided to make myself do it this year!

I'm not sure why, because my life is seriously busy enough as it is. Seriously. But I'm super excited for the chance to hopefully finish my first novel! It's always been a goal of mine to be a writer, and I've started a few novels but always gave up on them quickly. I have a great new idea I've been thinking about for a while and I'm very excited to get started on it!

Is anyone else doing this with me? I'd love some support. The website for NaNoWriMo is found here.

I'll be sure to keep you-my followers- updated during the month of November on how it's going for me, but don't be surprised if I don't around to reading as much then either.

It starts in a little over 3 weeks- November 1st, which is also my birthday, and the day after the 10 Day of Halloween are over. I am going to be pretty busy!
I hope to keep you updated on how it goes, and thanks for following! :D

Book Review: Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken

Title: Brightly Woven
Author: Alexandra Bracken
Series: None
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Release Date: March 23 2010
My Source: Library
My Rating: 4.5/5

Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.
In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.

Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

I want to start by saying how much I'm in love with pure fantasy. Books that take place completely in their own world and have no connections to ours whatsoever. In YA fiction books like this are rare, and maybe that's why I enjoy them so much when I come across them. Brightly Woven was one example of such a YA book, so maybe I'm a bit biased when it comes to my rating.

Brightly Woven follows Sydelle, a young girl who is your typical protagonist, but she was strong and I liked her. Wayland North, the young wizard who is her constant companion was easily my favorite character. I enjoyed reading every detail about him and I missed him on every page he wasn't there! I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. The cover flap used a phrase- "hard won romance" that I think really reflected their relationship. I love reading romances that grow over time because of their shared adventures together.

Sydelle's world is typical of fantasy, with some new and different twists on wizards, curses, and such. It was facinating, and there was never a dull moment in Brightly Woven. The pace was quick and the world was so intriging. The twists were really good too- I knew nothing about North and slowly we found out his secrets throughout the book, and we found out things about Sydelle too. I found it impossible to put this book down, I read the majority of this book in one sitting.

The only thing about this book that bothered me a bit was the writing. Bracken is a debut author with a lot of promise, but there were times this book sounded a little amateur-ish. Descriptions weren't very rich and I felt like sometimes the plot and Sydelle's character were a little unrealistic the way it unfolded. It wasn't enough to bother me that much, but I'll admit I noticed it.

Overall, I really liked Brightly Woven! I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, with a really nice light romance. I got this from the library, but I'm thinking I want to buy it, because I would definitely read it again. There aren't any sequels planned, but this book stands really well on it's own. So glad I read it!

Note: I recently read another Tiger of All-Consuming Books review of this novel! I really like it and agree with everything she said so I thought I'd share the link: http://tigersallconsumingbooks.blogspot.com/2010/08/review-brightly-woven-by-alexandra.html

Top Ten Tuesdays: Top Ten Favorite Authors

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish.

This week the topic is:
TOP TEN FAVORITE AUTHORS
(in no paticular order)
This is a mix of contemporary, classic, and anyone else I enjoy reading! It is pretty diverse.

1. Suzanne Collins
I love The Hunger Games (who doesn't?!), and she's an incredible writer. I also loved her Gregor the Overlander series when I read it when I was in middle school.
2. Libba Bray
A Great and Terrible Beauty is one of my all time favorite series, her writing is incredible. I really want to read more books by her, I know she has another one out.
3. Lauren Oliver
I've only read her debut Before I Fall, but I loved it and cannot wait to see what else she's going to write.
4. J.K. Rowling
Seriously, you can't read Harry Potter and not realize what an amazing writer she is.
5. Jane Austen
Where would the world be without Jane Austen? I've read Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensiblity, and seen the movie for Emma, and they're just some of the best romance stories ever.
6. Cassandra Clare
The Mortal Instruments series and Clockwork Angel? Heck yes.
7. J.R.R. Tolkien
I've only read half of the LOTR series, but I freakin love the movies...so yeah :).
8. Lisa Klein
She wrote one of my all-time favorite books ever, Ophelia, and if you haven't read it, you seriously should. I haven't read anything else by her yet, though I am definitely going to!
9. C.S. Lewis
I loved The Chronicles of Narnia growing up and I've heard a lot of good things about his other works and I'm hoping to check them out soon.
10. Rick Riordan
I really did enjoy the Percy Jackson series, and I'm looking forward to reading his other Camp Half-Blood series that comes out soon!
